Tools for measuring tissue and joint biomechanics

Abstract. Understanding the biomechanics of tissues and joints is critical for improving
treatments for musculoskeletal injuries and diseases. In this seminar, I will provide an overview
of common tools for measuring tissue and joint biomechanics and explain two ongoing projects
in my lab. The first project is developing sensors to measure the contact forces and centers of
pressure within the knee. The second project is developing a handheld sensor to measure the
tension in a ligament. I will cover the design of these sensors and our progress calibrating and
validating them highlighting the importance of mechanics throughout these processes.
