DESCRIPTION:UW-Madison Department of Materials Science and Engineering welcomes Dr. Angela R. Hight Walker. Her seminar\, “Novel Instrumentation for 2D Material Characterization: Combined Helicity-Resolved Magneto-Optical with Magneto-Transport”\, will take place on Tuesday\, June 9\, 2026\, from 2:30-3:30 p.m. in MSE 265. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBio \n\n\n\nDr. Angela R. Hight Walker is a senior scientist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)\, recognized for her leadership in pioneering optical spectroscopies to characterize quantum materials. A current focus area is using optical signatures to study magnetic order.  Over three decades\, she has led a dynamic research team unraveling the complexities of low-dimensional materials\, contributing nearly 200 multidisciplinary publications at the inface of physics\, chemistry\, and materials science. She is a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and OPTICA. Dr. Hight Walker is also a leading figure in nanotechnology standardization efforts\, contributing to ISO Technical Committee 229 Nanotechnologies and VAMAS TWA 41 and 42 committees. Beyond her scientific achievements\, Dr. Hight Walker is deeply committed to fostering inclusivity and diversity in science. She just finished the Chair-line for the Committee on the Status of Women in Physics (CSWP)\, one of APS’s oldest committees. She boldly advocates for science accessibility\, engaging young and under-resourced individuals through demonstrations and lectures\, while mentoring over 50 students and postdoctoral researchers\, many from underrepresented groups. \n\n\n\nAbstract \n\n\n\nRaman spectroscopy\, imaging\, and mapping are powerful non-contact\, non-destructive optical probes of quasiparticles and fundamental physics in graphene and other related two-dimensional (2D) materials\, including layered\, quantum materials. An amazing amount of information can be quantified from the Raman spectra\, including layer thickness\, disorder\, edge and grain boundaries\, doping\, strain\, thermal conductivity\, magnetic ordering\, and unique excitations such as magnons and charge density waves. Most interestingly for quantum materials is that Raman efficiently probes the evolution of the electronic structure and the electron-phonon\, spin-phonon\, and magnon-phonon interactions as a function of laser energy and polarization\, temperature\, and applied magnetic field. Our unique magneto-Raman spectroscopic capabilities will be detailed\, enabling polarization- and spatially-resolved optical measurements while simultaneously measuring electrical transport in a back-gated graphene Hall bar device.Raman and electrical data from an hBN-graphene-hBN device operating in the quantum Hall regime will demonstrate our novel capabilities. Also\, results from a series of 2D magnetic material systems showing multi-quasiparticle interactions observable with our unique measurement system will be highlighted. Lastly\, the importance of detailed alignment\, calibration and reference materials will be demonstrated quantifying the ability to differentiate chiral phonons as a function of temperature and laser wavelength.

DESCRIPTION:Materials and Fabrication Strategies for Strain-Invariant Stretchable Electronics and Displays\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract: Stretchable electronic systems often suffer from strain-induced performance drift\, which hinders reliable operation in practical settings. Under tensile deformation\, stretchable interconnects can lose conductivity; semiconductor devices can exhibit shifts in their current–voltage and transfer characteristics; and radio-frequency components can experience frequency detuning. Stretchable displays further face variations in fill factor and effective resolution\, which can distort rendered images and videos. Conventional stretchable touch sensors also struggle to decouple in-plane strain from out-of-plane pressure\, limiting sensing accuracy.This seminar will present recent advances toward deformation-invariant stretchable electronics and displays\, including semiconductor devices\, RF circuits\, displays\, and touch sensors that preserve their electrical and optical characteristics under elongation. I will highlight materials innovations and device-level design strategies that suppress strain sensitivity\, including strain-stable functional materials and architectures that mechanically decouple or compensate for deformation. I will also discuss design methodologies that maintain constant geometry or response under load. The talk will conclude with open challenges and future research directions toward robust\, manufacturable\, and truly strain-invariant stretchable systems. \n\n\n\nYei Hwan Jung\n\n\n\nBio: Professor Yei Hwan Jung is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electronic Engineering at Hanyang University. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and his B.S. from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.His research group addresses key challenges in semiconductors\, packaging\, and emerging electronics by advancing materials\, devices\, and manufacturing strategies\, with a focus on advanced packaging\, next-generation semiconductors\, deformable displays\, and wearable/implantable systems

DESCRIPTION:Milad Abolhasani | R.J. Polge Professor | North Carolina State University \n\n\n\nData-Rich Self-Driving Laboratories for Accelerated Materials and Molecular Discovery\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe discovery and development of new molecules and materials remain constrained by slow\, labor-intensive experimental workflows that are poorly matched to the complexity of modern chemical design spaces. This challenge is especially important in colloidal nanomaterials and catalytic systems\, where composition\, synthesis sequence\, reaction environment\, and reactor history collectively determine performance. To address these limitations\, we are developing a data-rich self-driving laboratory (SDL) ecosystem that integrates reaction and reactor engineering\, robotic experimentation\, high-throughput synthesis\, in-situ multi-modal characterization\, and artificial intelligence-guided decision-making to autonomously explore complex chemical spaces. Rather than simply automating experiments\, these systems continuously learn from evolving datasets and adapt their experimental strategies under uncertainty.  \n\n\n\nIn this talk\, I will highlight our group’s recent advances in autonomous discovery and optimization of colloidal quantum dots\, including metal halide perovskite and II-VI/III-V nanocrystals\, with emphasis on route-encoded synthesis\, sequence-aware learning\, and closed-loop control of optoelectronic properties. I will also discuss autonomous catalysis platforms for accelerated catalyst discovery and process development of specialty and fine chemicals\, where multi-robot SDLs enable efficient exploration of high-dimensional catalyst and reaction condition spaces. These advances establish SDLs as intelligent robotic co-pilots for accelerated molecular and materials discovery\, reducing development timelines from years to weeks while generating reproducible\, information-rich datasets that reveal transferable chemical knowledge.

So far\, we have avoided topics such as quantum computing hardware because we believe the time horizon is too long\, although the skill sets developed through quantum computing hardware research can be relevant to other areas of quantum research.

DESCRIPTION:Radiative Thermal Control of Spacecraft using Thermochromic Infrared Materials\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract:  Thermochromic infrared surfaces have temperature-dependent emissivity spectra that enable radiators to respond to changes in the thermal environment. Spacecraft can leverage this unique behavior for autoregulating thermal control\, where thermochromic surfaces are designed to passively transition between a high thermal emissivity (to radiate heat when hot) and a low thermal emissivity (to retain heat when cold). In this talk\, we introduce the materials\, methods\, and analyses of Variable Emissivity Materials (VEMs) using thermal objectives\, where spectral infrared engineering is used to achieve passive control over temperature and heat flux. We show how the models and materials are validated calorimetrically and describe a novel set of thermo-optic characteristics used in both the design and system modeling of VEMs. Finally\, we present an optimization perspective for further development of VEMs for thermal control. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBio: Dr. Max R. Lien is a research scientist focused on developing optical materials and photonics for national security applications. He earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2019\, followed by a Master of Science in 2021 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 2023 from the University of Southern California\, all in electrical engineering. Currently\, Dr. Lien is a Principal Research Scientist in the basic research laboratories at Northrop Grumman in Redondo Beach\, California\, where he oversees a portfolio of advanced material development and leads research collaborations with academic partners. Previously\, he was a Visiting Technologist at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory working on mid-infrared optics for compact hyperspectral imagers.

DESCRIPTION:Jeffrey LopezAssistant ProfessorDepartment of Chemical and Biological EngineeringNorthwestern University \n\n\n\nInterfacial Reaction Mechanisms Toward Precision Engineering of Interphase Chemistry in Next-Generation Batteries\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhile lithium based battery technologies are becoming increasingly widespread in our energy landscape\, both in electric vehicles and grid scale storage\, there is a continued need to increase energy density\, reduce costs\, and improve the sustainability of their manufacturing. At the heart of every battery is an ionically conductive but electronically insulating electrolyte that dictates the safety\, charge rate\, and cycling lifetime of the device. Furthermore\, for every new battery technology\, a new electrolyte must be identified and optimized so that it is compatible with the desired electrode components. Electrolyte decomposition is engineered to produce stabilizing interphases that kinetically passivate electrode surfaces\, but the mechanisms to form these interphases and their ideal microstructure and composition are not well understood. In this presentation\, I will discuss recent progress in our group toward improving the precision with which interphases can be designed to enable high energy density and low cost storage. \n\n\n\nFirst\, I will detail our group’s efforts to better understand electrolyte reaction mechanisms that initiate and propagate organic SEI matrix growth. I will discuss the development of spin trapping to stabilize radical intermediates in electrolyte reduction pathways to clarify reaction mechanisms. Through this approach\, we have confirmed a ring opening mechanism for fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) reduction and the reduction of 1\,1\,2\,2-tetrafluoroethyl 2\,2\,3\,3-tetrafluoropropylether (TTE) into vinyl monomers that protect inorganic interphase components. Second\, the kinetic competition between electrolyte components influences the composition of the organic phase of the SEI. We have used operando FTIR to identify how lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6) modulates the competition between FEC and lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) during interphase formation\, and we have used quantitative measurements of selectivity to anion decomposition to develop a framework for estimating the solvent vs anion selectivity in interphase formation. Finally\, I will discuss efforts to understand and control the morphology of the composite electrodes within which these interphase formation reactions take place. We have used Contrast Variation Small Angle Neutron Scattering (CV-SANS) for quantitative analysis of nanoscale interfaces in the composite electrode and surface modification to control the electrode-binder interfaces and improve dry battery electrode manufacturing. Increased cohesion between the active material and the PTFE dry binder enables more uniform distribution of the carbon and binder throughout the electrode and the use of only 0.1 wt% binder to fabricate dry electrodes. Together\, these results build toward a more detailed understanding of critically important interphase chemistry. With a comprehensive view of reaction mechanisms\, kinetics\, and electrode structure\, new opportunities will arise for precise design and control of the interphase in next generation batteries.
