SUMMARY:ME 903 Graduate Seminar: Larry Ilcewicz
DESCRIPTION:The ME 903: Graduate Student Lecture Series features campus and visiting speakers who present on a variety of research topics in the field of mechanical engineering. Dr. Larry Ilcewicz is the Chief Scientist and Technical Advisor\, Advanced Composite Materials at the Federal Aviation Administration. \n\n\n\nPresentation Title: Engineering Practices for Composite Aircraft Structural Damage Tolerance and Aging Resistance \n\n\n\nAbstract: This seminar will cover damage tolerance and aging principles for composite and bonded aircraft structures\, including the associated design\, structural substantiation\, and maintenance practices. The importance of stringent material and process controls applied in production and field repair will also be emphasized. Polymer composite aircraft structural applications have generally had a very good service history\, indicating that structures can be designed\, repeatably manufactured\, and safely maintained for the life of each aircraft\, based on proven certification practices. Damage threats\, environmental effects\, and degradation mechanisms have been studied to develop material screening methods\, design guidelines & criteria\, manufacturing quality controls\, and structural analysis & test protocol for certification. Over 50 years of applications\, certified composite aircraft structures have demonstrated environmental & mechanical fatigue resistance and operational damage tolerance\, aligned with existing industry maintenance practices. \n\n\n\nBio: Dr. Larry Ilcewicz is the FAA Chief Scientific and Technical Advisor for Composite Materials. He started work with the FAA in 1998 and has supported many certification activities for small airplanes\, rotorcraft\, and transport aircraft. He has also worked on major accident investigations and service problems involving composites. These experiences helped Larry develop and execute an international plan for composite safety and certification initiatives to work with industry\, academia\, and other civil aviation authorities to develop composite regulatory guidance\, training\, and standardization. \n\n\n\nLarry came to the FAA from The Boeing Company\, where he worked 17 years on various commercial transport aircraft programs. This included support to 737\, 757\, 767 and 777 aircraft in various stages of development\, production\, and service. He has authored/co-authored more than 90 technical publications. He served as co-chairman for Composite Materials Handbook 17\, CMH-17\, for more than 25 years. He won the U.S. Presidential Rank Award in 2013. In 2019\, he received the AIAA Crichlow Prize\, which led to an invitation to give the 2020 Structures\, Structural Dynamics\, and Materials (SDM) Lecture\, which was a basis for some of the content in this seminar. Related references will be noted throughout the seminar for participants interested in gaining advanced knowledge on the subjects.

SUMMARY:Mechanics Seminar: Professor Melissa Green
DESCRIPTION:The Mechanics Seminar Series is a weekly seminar given by campus and visiting speakers on topics across the spectrum of mechanics research (solids\, fluids\, and dynamics). Professor Melissa Green is an associate professor at the University of Minnesota. \n\n\n\nPresentation Title: Physics-informed refinement of transition networks for unsteady lift prediction \n\n\n\nAbstract: The prediction of lift during in-flight conditions poses significant challenges\, and the development of effective tools for predicting aerodynamic loads is of great importance. In this work\, a weighted-average based transition network was used to predict the lift generated by a pitching airfoil under highly separated flow conditions using surface pressure sensors as input. The number of required inputs was greatly reduced by observation of the flow field distribution and locations of greatest correlated pressure fluctuations. \n\n\n\nAdditionally\, the network inputs were hybridized to include pitch angle and pitch rate\, among others. We show that the lift prediction of a transition network based on 2-4 inputs predicted lift just as well as a prediction based on all 36 surface pressure sensors.

SUMMARY:ME 903 Graduate Seminar: Dustyn Roberts
DESCRIPTION:The ME 903: Graduate Student Lecture Series features campus and visiting speakers who present on a variety of research topics in the field of mechanical engineering. Professor Dustyn Roberts an associate professor at The University of Pennsylvania. \n\n\n\nTitle: Turning Passions into Publications and Pedagogy: Bike Safety and Sustainable Engineering \n\n\n\nAbstract: How can teaching-focused faculty turn areas of interest into research and meaningful educational experiences? This talk explores that question through two examples: transportation safety and sustainable engineering. The first examines research on child passengers on adult bicycles\, where the available evidence is far thinner than prevailing practices and assumptions might suggest\, and how that work has informed a bicycle engineering course and a transportation systems course. The second examines efforts to integrate sustainability into engineering education through the Engineering for One Planet framework\, including an NSF-funded\, multi-department study. Together\, these examples illustrate ways of connecting engineering research\, educational scholarship\, and course development. \n\n\n\nBio: Dustyn is a Practice Associate Professor at the University of Pennsylvania. Her training\, professional experience\, and interests span mechanical\, biomedical\, and transportation engineering. She’s passionate about engineering education\, sustainability\, and bridging the gap between research and real-world impact through entrepreneurial thinking and translational work. Her work has been supported by organizations including NSF\, VentureWell\, ASEE\, and The Lemelson Foundation. She received her B.S. in Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University\, her M.S. in Biomechanics & Movement Science from the University of Delaware\, and her Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from New York University. She rides her cargo bike to work most days\, usually with one or more kids on the back.
