Industrial and systems engineering faculty members Gabriel Zayas-Caban and Oguzhan Alagoz are teaming up on a project to improve patient transitions from hospitals to skilled nursing facilities.
The two—along with Maureen Smith, a professor in the School of Medicine and Public Health—have landed a three-year, $425,018 grant from the National Science Foundation, with Zayas-Caban serving as principal investigator.
Zayas-Caban and Alagoz, both of whom apply their expertise in mathematical modeling to healthcare questions, will develop analytical methods that can inform recommendations for these care transitions.
