September 28, 2023 New Mechanical Engineering Faculty: Wei Wang Written By: Caitlin Scott Departments: Mechanical Engineering Categories: Faculty Wei Wang will join the Department of Mechanical Engineering as an Assistant Professor in January 2024! Wang will lead the new Marine Robotics Lab at UW-Madison. Wang’s research group is broadly interested in designing and controlling autonomous robots within complex environments, with a special focus on aquatic settings. They are fascinated by innovative robot concepts that have the potential to offer groundbreaking solutions for both scientific and engineering challenges. They are also enthusiastic about enabling robots to autonomously navigate in challenging environments. This includes novel methods and tools for control, planning, mapping, and perception. The group mission is to enable reliable and coordinated autonomy for a broad range of robotics applications, including but not limited to, aquatic monitoring, oceanic exploration, underwater construction, and urban transportation. Wang earned his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Peking University in 2016. He is currently a Research Scientist in the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) & Senseable City Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
