After 15 years of dedicated service to the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), Charlie Quagliana bids farewell as he retires from the team.

“Jeff Russell and John Nelson drafted me into the department to assist a Capstone team for one semester. That was some 34 semesters ago, including four summer sessions,” shares Charlie.

Charlie’s service to the CEE Department began in August 2008 when he volunteered as a mentor in the senior capstone design class. With decades of experience as an architect focused on the rehabilitation and restoration of buildings, including the Wisconsin State Capitol as a signature project, Charlie brought an important set of skills and expertise to the CEE team. His commitment to teaching and mentoring students soon led to formal appointments as an adjunct professor and member of CEE’s Professors of Practice group.

Charlie’s approach to collaborative teamwork helped shape CEE’s Capstone course into the NCEES award-winning learning experience it is today. He also founded and taught CEE 451, “Architecture Design for Construction,” imparting his invaluable knowledge and shaping future generations of engineers. Charlie’s many contributions to the Badger engineering community were honored with the James G. Woodburn Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching from the College of Engineering in 2019.

Many individuals leave a mark on the institutions they serve, and Charlie is no exception. He has touched the lives of many within the department, whether it was through working together on projects or listening to the voices of others. As we bid farewell to Charlie, we express our deepest gratitude for his service and commitment to the Badger engineering community.

“We have been very fortunate to have Charlie as a member of the CEE team. He has been instrumental in helping our students better understand the integration of engineering and architecture, and seeing the career pathways that integration creates. We are better because of his contributions,” concludes Greg Harrington, professor and CEE department chair.
