August 23, 2023 Choy highlighted as rising leader of the “Quantum Prairie” Written By: Staff Departments: Electrical & Computer Engineering Categories: Faculty The Chicago Quantum Exchange, an intellectual hub for advancing the science and engineering of quantum information, recently published an article highlighting the rising leaders of the Quantum Prairie. The Quantum Prairie concept refers to a group of institutions including the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Northwestern University, and Argonne and Fermi National Laboratories as well as regional entrepreneurs, industrial partners and other institutions creating one of the premier regional ecosystems for quantum research. The article highlights several participants in the quantum community, including Jennifer Choy, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at UW-Madison who researches quantum sensors. The article highlights Choy’s journey to UW-Madison and the Midwest, where she says she’s found an academic home. “Thanks to the cluster of universities and national labs with strong and diverse quantum research programs in Wisconsin and Illinois, I was able to become part of large research centers based in the Midwest that were started by the National Quantum Initiative,” she says in the article. “It ended up being very lucky that I got to be here. It’s a very supportive and collaborative ecosystem.” Top photo caption: Choy and PhD student Ricardo Vidrio in Choy’s quantum lab. Photo by: Wenxin (Sabrina) Wu
