December 27, 2024 ECE’s Kim wins best poster at Materials Research Society Fall Meeting Written By: Allyson Crowley Departments: Electrical & Computer Engineering Categories: Graduate|Research|Students ECE PhD student Minjeong Kim Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) PhD student Minjeong Kim won a best poster award during the 2024 Materials Research Society Fall Meeting which was held in Boston recently. The international conference on materials research draws researchers from around the globe to delve into the field’s cutting-edge scientific advancements. Kim’s poster presented her research titled, Broadband light extraction from shallow NV centers using low-Q silicon antennas. It was one of only five winners from 618 submitted posters. Kim shared, “Our research explores how specially designed silicon structures can enhance the light output from tiny defects in diamond, known as nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers. These defects are highly sensitive to their surroundings, making them ideal for advanced sensing applications. By placing a silicon antenna directly on the diamond surface, we significantly improve light extraction efficiency without damaging the diamond, paving the way for more effective use of NV centers in technologies like quantum sensors.” ECE PhD student Tanuj Kumar Kim is a member of the Kats Research group led by ECE Jack St. Clair Kilby and Antoine-Bascom Professor Mikhail Kats. Other members of the Kats group attended the conference including ECE PhD student Tanuj Kumar who gave an oral presentation, Interferometric Measurements of Temperature-Dependent Optical Absorption in Low-Loss SiN Membranes for Laser Sails. Group alum Chenghao Wan presented a poster in the Faculty Candidate Poster Session. Wan, who is currently a post doctoral researcher at Stanford University, presented the poster titled, Sustainable Electromagnetics: Revolutionized Electrified Reactors & Optoelectronic Systems. ECE alum Chenghao Wen ECE was well-represented at the conference. PhD candidate Haotian Jiang presented his research titled, Abnormal Nonlinear Hall Effect in Few-Layer Weyl Semimetal TaIrTe₄. Jiang is a member of the Nanoscale Quantum Materials and Devices research group led by ECE Dugald C. Jackson Assistant Professor Ying Wang.
