For Professor Emeritus Dave Gustafson, it’s always been about the patients.

Gustafson, for whom the chair of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering is named, has been instrumental in making the deparment an international leader in health systems engineering. He has spent his nearly 60-year career applying his expertise in systems towards solving challenges that people face on their quest for good care. In the 1970s, his initial research focused on suicide prevention. In the 1990s, he developed the Comprehensive Health Enhancement Support System (CHESS), which can be applied to developing systems for patients battling addiction, cancer, or a variety of other health issues. His most recent venture is Elder Tree, a web-based platform specifically for seniors.

Gustafson has always kept top of mind those who benefit most from his critical research in the field of healthcare; the patients.

Thank you to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality for their recent profile on this pioneer in the field of digital health research.
