Bjorn Borgen Professor of Mechanical Engineering Christian Franck and his research team received the best paper of 2022 award from the Society of Experimental Mechanics (SEM) for their innovative development of a high-speed, tomographic motion tracking system based on light field microscopy.

The winning paper, entitled “High-Speed, 3D Volumetric Displacement and Strain Mapping in Soft Materials Using Light Field Microscopy” was published in the November 2022 edition of Experimental Mechanics. The new techniques explained in the paper give researchers the capability to measure material deformations live in 3D and at high speeds (milliseconds and faster). The Franck Lab plans to use this technique to visualize how tissues like the brain deform during a traumatic brain injury.

The M. Hetényi award was established in 1967 for the best research paper published in Experimental Mechanics. It was named in honor of Dr. Miklos Hetényi, one of the four founders of SEM. The 2023 recipients are Selda Buyukozturk, Alexander K. Landauer, Luke A. Summey, Angel N. Chukwu, Jing Zhang, and Christian Franck. Read more about each recipient via SEM.
