Hogentogler Award from the ASTM International. The annual award recognizes a standout paper in the areas of soil or rock in an engineering context. The UW-Madison duo’s paper, which appeared in ASTM Geotechnical Testing Journal, compared two methods of measuring thermal conductivity of unsaturated soils. Yao earned his PhD in geological and geophysical engineering in 2018.
