National Academies honor Carayon for service

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine have honored Pascale Carayon, the Leon and Elizabeth Janssen Professor in the College of Engineering, by designating her as a National Associate, a lifetime title.

Carayon is an internationally respected expert on applying human factors and system engineering thinking to healthcare and, in particular, patient safety. She has regularly contributed to National Academies efforts, including co-chairing a committee that released a report on clinician burnout and well-being in October 2019.

Carayon also previously chaired the Board on Human-Systems Integration in the National Academies’ Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education and served on another National Academies committee that in 2018 created a report outlining the effects of poor healthcare globally and strategies for improving quality of care, particularly in low-income countries.

A longtime faculty member in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, she is also the director of both the Center for Quality and Productivity Improvement and the Wisconsin Institute for Healthcare Systems Engineering.
