July 21, 2026 New Mechanical Engineering Faculty: Chloe Dedic Written By: Caitlin Scott Departments: Mechanical Engineering Categories: Faculty Chloe Dedic joins Mechanical Engineering as an Associate Professor in August 2026! Chloe Dedic’s research laboratory will focus on the design and application of advanced, laser-based measurements and nonlinear spectroscopy techniques to study reacting flow systems. Her work focuses on improving our understanding of combustion and nonequilibrium systems with the goal of furthering the development of technologies related to clean energy utilization, aerospace propulsion, and hypersonic aerothermodynamics. Dedic is particularly interested in applying complex laser measurements to study harsh environments while emphasizing measurement accuracy and spatial and temporal resolution. Dedic earned her BS and PhD degrees from Iowa State University in 2012 and 2017, respectively. After graduation she worked as a visiting scientist with the National Institute of Aerospace at NASA Langley Research Center and joined the University of Virginia Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department as an assistant professor in 2018. She is the recipient of a DARPA Young Faculty Award, a NASA Early Career Faculty Award, and the AFOSR Young Investigator Program.
