IBM Bascom Professor of Materials Science and Engineering John Perepezko has received the 2017 Gold Medal from ASM International, one of the most prestigious honors bestowed by the society. According to the award announcement, ASM International recognized Perepezko for his “innovations to the fundamental understanding and application of structural synthesis, kinetics and alloy phase stability during materials processing.” These innovations have been crucial in obtaining useful microstructures, nanostructures and amorphous materials. Perepezko received his PhD in metallurgical and materials science in 1973 from Carnegie-Mellon University, as well as bachelor’s and master’s degrees in metallurgical engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of New York. He has been a member of the College of Engineering faculty since 1975. His research interests include phase transformations, nucleation, interface reactions, and kinetics. Perepezko is a fellow of ASM-International, TMS, and MRS, and is a member of the National Academy of Engineering. He has chaired many committees in these and other societies, and has been an adjunct professor at Tohoku University in Japan since 2008. Additionally in his 42-year career in the College of Engineering, Perepezko has won numerous teaching and other research awards. Perepezko will receive his award at ASM’s annual awards dinner in October 2017 during the Materials Science and Technology 2017 technical meeting.
