The American Society for Composites has named Pavana Prabhakar, an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering and the Charles G. Salmon Fellow of Structural Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a 2019 ASC/DesTech Young Researcher Award winner.

ASC gives the award each year to a researcher younger than 35 years old who has made a significant early impact on the science and technology of composite materials through sustained research.

Prabhakar has researched a breadth of materials science matters, including damage and failure mechanics of structural composite materials, life prediction of materials in extreme multiphysics environment and multiscale material modeling of hierarchical materials. ASC will present her award in September at its annual meeting.

During the 2018-19 academic year, Prabhakar won a 2019 Young Investigator Award from the Office of Naval Research for her work to improve damage tolerance and resilience in extreme loading and environmental conditions for vessels, offshore structures, aircraft and automobiles.
