February 21, 2023 Roald receives VMware University Research Fund grant Written By: Jason Daley Departments: Electrical & Computer Engineering Categories: Faculty|Grants Line Roald Line Roald, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, recently received a gift from the VMware University Research Fund, a donor-advised fund managed by Vanguard Charitable. The $125,000 grant supports a research project called “Right Place Right Time (RiPiT): Reducing Cloud Carbon Emissions by Dancing with the Power Grid.” Roald and her students are collaborating on the project with Andrew Chien, a professor at the University of Chicago. Data centers and other large-scale digital services use massive amounts of electricity, producing a major carbon footprint. That’s why VMware is supporting this and several other projects that seek to better understand and develop strategies to mitigate the carbon footprint of these large-scale data facilities.
