October 21, 2024 Suresh honored with 2024 ASME CIE Excellence in Research Award Written By: Caitlin Scott Departments: Mechanical Engineering Categories: Awards|Faculty|Research Mechanical Engineering Mead Witter Foundation Professor Krishnan Suresh has received the ASME CIE Excellence in Research Award for 2024! Krishnan Suresh The ASME CIE (Computers and Information in Engineering) Division award recognizes a current ASME member for outstanding research contributions in any field associated with the use of computers in engineering. Prof. Suresh’s work pushes the boundaries of quantum mechanics and design optimization. He aims to harness the immense computational power of modern computing systems such as GPUs, CPU-clusters and quantum computers to solve previously intractable problems and unlock new frontiers in design and optimization. One of his external letters of reference for the award noted that Prof. Suresh is a pioneer in exploiting Graphics Programmable Units (GPU) to accelerate FEA. He invented the idea of assembly-free preconditioning that leads to dramatic speed-up over conventional linear solvers for FEA, with ramifications in every engineering discipline. Prof. Suresh received the award after the Division’s conference in August 2024. Congratulations! Featured image: Krishnan Suresh at the 2022 Mechanical Engineering Investiture ceremony.
