September 7, 2018 Uicker receives ASME Machine Design Award Written By: Staff Departments: Mechanical Engineering Categories: Awards The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) has honored Mechanical Engineering Professor Emeritus John Uicker with the 2018 ASME Machine Design Award, which is one of the top awards in the ASME Design Division. ASME recognized Uicker for outstanding contributions to machine design and kinematic research on spatial linkages and robotics. ASME also cited the textbook, Theory of Machines and Mechanisms, which Uicker co-authored with two other researchers and which is recognized around the world as the leading text on the subject. Uicker taught and mentored engineering students at UW-Madison for 40 years while carrying out research programs on robotics and machine design. The recipient of many honors and awards for teaching and distinguished service in the engineering field, Uicker is the developer of the Integrated Mechanisms Program, or IMP, an elaborate computer software system supporting robotics and automobile suspensions. Among his geometric modeling software systems is a program that predicts collisions between moving objects. Uicker formally received the award at ASME’s International Design and Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference in Quebec City, Canada, in August 2018.
