The International Conference on Molecular Beam Epitaxy (ICMBE) has named UW-Madison Materials Science and Engineering Associate Professor Jason Kawasaki as this year’s Young Investigator of MBE for “his work on Epitaxial synthesis and strain engineering of Heusler films and freestanding membranes.” The ICMBE notes that Kawasaki “shows promise of future leadership in the field,” making significant contributions to MBE before turning 40.

When asked what the award meant to him, Kawasaki said, “It’s a great honor to receive this award and a strong testament to the outstanding students, collaborators, and mentors I have worked with.”

Kawasaki received his Bachelor’s in Engineering from Princeton University in 2009, before earning his PhD in Materials from the University of California Santa Barbara in 2014. From 2014-2016 at Cornell University, he was a Kavli Postdoctoral Fellow. Then, in 2016, he joined UW-Madison’s Materials Science and Engineering Department as an assistant professor. Eight years later, he was promoted to associate professor with tenure.

Today, he researches epitaxial synthesis of Heusler films, superlattice, and single crystalline membrane. He also leads an Interdisciplinary Research Group (IRG) within the  Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) that studies ultrafast magnetic switching in 2D materials and membranes.

Congratulations Associate Professor Jason Kawasaki on this outstanding accomplishment.
