July 20, 2026 Wisconsin Aerospace Competes at SAE Aero Design Competition Written By: Kassi Akers Departments: Mechanical Engineering Categories: Students | Undergraduate At the end of the 2025 season, Wisconsin Aerospace (formerly known as SAE Aero UW) had 2 main goals: 1) place higher at the competition, and 2) bring an even larger group of students to represent UW-Madison. With their 2026 season officially behind them, it is easy to say they accomplished these goals and more! 2026 SAE Aero Design Competition Team The team placed 18th out of 31 teams (up from their 22nd placement out of 27 teams last year) and tripled their competition attendance. Unfortunately, the team encountered electrical issues that prevented them from earning a flight score. Despite this setback, they came away with valuable lessons, ideas for improvement, and plenty of motivation for next year’s event. Highlights from the SAE Aero Design West competition include: 18th Place Overall 10th Place in Flight Demonstration Readiness Review (FDRR) 20th Place in Technical Design report (TDR) Networking with other teams Strengthening club leadership and technical knowledge A relatively new organization on UW-Madison’s campus, this was the team’s 2nd year participating in the competition. Although a young team, their continued growth, momentum, and improvements demonstrate the strength of their members and the foundation they are building for future success! After a 16 hour drive, the team reassembles the plane for competition. Assembled and ready to go! Fitting the wings just right.
