August 22, 2025 Wisconsin Autonomous wins 2nd Place in year 4 of the SAE Autodrive Challenge II Written By: Kassi Akers Departments: Electrical & Computer Engineering|Mechanical Engineering This summer, UW-Madison’s Wisconsin Autonomous team made headlines—earning an impressive 2nd place finish in Year 4 of the SAE Autodrive Challenge II. Competing against top engineering schools from across North America (7 universities from the US and 2 from Canada), the team showcased cutting-edge research, advanced software integration, and the spirit of Badger engineering excellence. SAE Autodrive Challenge II The SAE Autodrive Challenge II is a multi-year competition, hosted by SAE International and GM, where select schools work to transform a Chevrolet Bolt into an autonomous vehicle. Each year the goals get progressively harder as teams construct and consider the variety of elements it takes to build a self-driving car. Although the competition has guidelines and specific parameters, teams have the freedom to choose the number and type of perception (i.e. cameras, lidar, radar, etc.) devices they want to use. Unique to UW-Madison’s vehicle, the team opted for low-cost radar units, which are not only cost-effective, but also demonstrate high functionality doesn’t always require high cost. Driven with Pride Not only do teams have the ability to select their own technology, but they also get to showcase their creativity through vehicle design. Each team’s car becomes a rolling reflection of their school spirit, culture, and engineering identity. In true Wisconsin fashion, the UW-Madison car proudly sports a cow-themed appearance—complete with black-and-white spots, a nod to Wisconsin’s dairy heritage. It’s a playful, eye-catching way to stand out—and a reminder that innovation and local pride go hand in hand. Results Nineteen students and the faculty advisor were present at the week-long competition held at MCity in Ann Arbor, Michigan. MCity is a purpose built, autonomous vehicle site located on the University of Michigan’s campus. The team captured a 2nd place overall finish with 609 points out of 1004. They also won $7,750 in prize money. In individual events, the UW team excelled at: Project management: 2nd place Overall Static Event: 5th place Design your Own Challenge: 1st place 99% Buyoff Ride Challenge: 2nd place Localization Challenge: 3rd place HMI Challenge: 1st place Overall Dynamic Events: 2nd place What’s next? With the competition’s success, SAE International and GM have decided to extend the competition for another year. As the academic year approaches, Wisconsin Autonomous is looking forward to continuing to improve their vehicle and setting their sites on a win in year 5. Over the past 4 years, hundreds of Badger engineers’ hands and minds have influenced this vehicle’s success. Now, building on a legacy of innovation, teamwork, and perseverance, the team is more driven than ever to push the boundaries of autonomous technology and proudly represent UW-Madison on the national stage. Thank you to team faculty advisor, Professor Glenn Bower, for providing the photos and competition details.
