August 4, 2026 Wisconsin Robotics Moves Forward in University Rover Challenge Written By: Kassi Akers Departments: Electrical & Computer Engineering | Mechanical Engineering Categories: Students | Undergraduate UW-Madison 2026 Rover – Forward Set against the red-rock landscape of southern Utah’s desert terrain, Wisconsin Robotics debuted a newly designed competition rover at the 2026 University Rover Challenge (URC). After narrowly missing qualification the previous year, the team earned an impressive 12th-place finish among 38 finalist teams—and 116 teams worldwide—displaying the strong efforts and hard work of this 60-member organization. Fondly named ‘Forward,’ as a nod to the state’s motto and the team’s progressive spirit, the rover featured: New mechanical systems, including the entire arm, rocker, and drive systems An overhauled electrical system, adding power distribution boards, modular printed circuit boards, and a graphical user interface A fabricated methane-sensing semiconductor to complement the fluorometry system A custom user interface to launch missions and view camera feeds for teleoperation The redesign proved beneficial as the team competed in a series of Mars-inspired missions that tested the rover’s ability to navigate rugged terrain, conduct scientific investigations, service equipment, and complete complex tasks that mirror those faced during planetary exploration. George Vandersluis, a rising senior in Mechanical Engineering and the Mechanical Lead, commented, “[the competition gave us] valuable experience that members will take with them into next year when designing more robust systems.” Excited to build on this year’s success, Wisconsin Robotics is already preparing for the challenges ahead, eager to apply the lessons learned and continue innovative work in the field of robotics.
