UW-Madison Mechanical Engineering Assistant Professor Xiangru Xu and his collaborators from several universities have received the IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering (T-ASE) Googol Best New Application Paper Award for 2019 from the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society.

The award recognizes the best new application paper of T-ASE published in the previous calendar year. Xu is the lead author on the winning paper, “Correctness guarantees for the composition of lane keeping and adaptive cruise control.”

In the paper, the researchers describe a control method to guarantee the safety of driver assistance systems such as adaptive cruise control and lane keeping. The method allows manufacturers to design each system independently while guaranteeing they will work correctly when both are activated simultaneously in an autonomous vehicle. Xu says this method can also be applied to other autonomous systems, such as drones and walking robots.

Co-authors on the paper include Jessy W. Grizzle from the University of Michigan, Paulo Tabuada from UCLA, Aaron D. Ames from Caltech.
