Zongfu Yu

Grainger Professor

Currently on leave Fall 2025 – Spring 2026. Dr. Yu’s research combines nanotechnology, machine learning, and advanced modeling of light waves to enhance visual perception for machines. One example of his lab’s recent work shows how a nanostructured glass can achieve visual perception that is equivalent to a vision system. This passive medium does not consume energy and can process visual images extremely efficiently. Another example is their work on directional visual sensing based on Si nanowires, which draws inspiration from animal directional hearing.
