Magnetic Resonance Imaging: From nuclear spins to Fourier transforms to advanced image reconstruction

Abstract: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a revolutionary medical device impacting 100 million people each year and is a rich field for applications in signal processing and machine learning. This talk will introduce the basics of MRI signal and spatial encoding, discuss a few signal processing advances to facilitate faster and more robust imaging, and present some of the opportunities and challenges for ML integration.

Bio: Jim Pipe received his BSEE and MSEE, and MS and PhD in Bioengineering from the University of Michigan. He was recently recruited to UW Madison’s Department of Radiology from the Mayo Clinic. Dr. Pipe’s research focuses on developing next-generation methods for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) that have a real, positive impact on patient care. Former profile at Mayo Clinic. LinkedIn
