Materials Science Seminar Series – Professor John Speer

February 22 @ 12:20 PM 1:20 PM

Materials Science Seminar Series presents Professor John Speer on Thursday, February 22, from 12:20 to 1:20 p.m. The seminar is hosted by Professor Hyunseok Oh and will be held in MS&E building room 265. Professor Speer will be discussing next-generation steel developments for automotive lightweighting.

Abstract

Steel development for important markets like automobile manufacturing, construction, machinery, energy, etc. has been ongoing for decades, and has enabled steel to play an important role in modern society.  To reduce automobile weight and improve fuel economy and reduced emissions, for example, steel developments have occurred faster than ever since 2000, and this presentation will provide some background related to these trends and highlight some of the new steel development concepts pursued in the speaker’s laboratory that are impacting this field.

Bio

John Speer is the ABS Professor of Metallurgy at Colorado School of Mines, and Director of the Advanced Steel Processing and Products Research Center (ASPPRC), a research consortium supported by 31 companies.  He received a B.S. degree from Lehigh University in Metallurgy and Materials Engineering, in 1980 and a D.Phil. in Physical Metallurgy from the University of Oxford, UK in 1983.  He served in various positions at the Homer Research Laboratories of Bethlehem Steel Corporation from 1983-1997, and became a Professor in the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at Colorado School of Mines in 1997.  He also served as Mines’ Associate Vice-President for Research from 2008 until he began his tenure as ASPPRC Director in 2013.  John’s activities are especially focused on development and application of steels.  He is a Fellow of ASM International, a Distinguished Member, Fellow and officer of the Association for Iron and Steel Technology, Past-President of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers (the “parent” of AIST, TMS, SME and SPE), and a member of the US National Academy of Engineering.  His work with students and colleagues has been recognized with a number of awards.
