Shiyu Zhou elected to the Society of Manufacturing Engineers College of Fellows

Written By: Silke Schmidt

Shiyu Zhou, a professor of industrial and systems engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, was one of only six individuals elected into the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) College of Fellows in 2017. This is one of the most prestigious honors bestowed by SME, a nonprofit society dedicated to supporting the manufacturing profession, promoting advanced manufacturing technology, and developing a skilled workforce.

Zhou’s research focuses on the process control and fault management of manufacturing production and service delivery systems. He integrates physical knowledge of the process with advanced data analytics methods to devise new monitoring, diagnosis, prognosis and control methodologies.

Some of his major contributions to the field include: variation modeling, analysis and diagnosis for manufacturing processes under the “stream of variation” framework; process control methodology for scaling up the production of nanocomposite, a solid material containing nanoparticles; and Internet-of-Things (IOT)-enabled predictive analytics and decision-making algorithms. Many of the tools Zhou has developed have been validated and successfully adopted in real-life industry settings. He has managed more than $5.5 million in research funds from government agencies and industry sponsors to date.

The election as an SME Fellow also recognizes Zhou’s many years of industrial leadership and service in professional societies, such as the SEM, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE, formerly IIE) and the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS). His educational activities and academic leadership roles include developing two new graduate-level courses, serving as associate department chair and director of graduate studies, and overseeing extensive renovations of the flexible manufacturing lab at UW-Madison. The lab, which began to gain national recognition in the 1980s, has played an important role in training the next generation of manufacturing engineers.

The 2017 Fellows Installation Ceremony will be held in November at the SEM’s annual meeting in Chicago.
