Styliana Avraamidou, the Duane H. and Dorothy M. Bluemke Assistant Professor in chemical and biological engineering, received the 2026 AIChE Environmental Division Early Career Award. This award is intended to honor an individual with outstanding contributions in environmental chemical engineering in the early stages of the recipient’s career.

She works on expanding the limits of chemical and process systems engineering by developing tools for the understanding, analysis, and optimization of the interconnected circular economy supply chains. Avraamidou has authored or co-authored over 65 major research publications in the areas of circular economy, food-energy-water nexus, multi-level optimization, system modeling, process control, energy and systems engineering applications. She has also published one book on the area of multi-level mixed-integer optimization. Recently, she also earned a National Science Foundation-funded CAREER award. With this award, she’s developing tools that allow farmers, food processors and distributors to better understand and work around unexpected disruptions in the perishable supply chain.

This award was originally announced in the Environmental Division Fall 2026 newsletter by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.
