Carayon elected to Academy of Quality and Safety in Health Care

Pascale Carayon, the Leon and Elizabeth Janssen Professor in the College of Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has been elected to the Academy of Quality and Safety in Health Care, becoming one of 80 members worldwide.

The academy, established in 2018 by the International Society for Quality in Health Care, honors leaders in the field of healthcare quality and safety with lifetime memberships.

Carayon, part of the faculty in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering and director of the Wisconsin Institute for Healthcare Systems Engineering and the Center for Quality and Productivity Improvement, is an established expert in applying human factors and systems engineering principles to meet healthcare challenges, including patient safety and clinician burnout.

She is also a fellow of both the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society and the International Ergonomics Association, and has been named to Becker’s Hospital Review’s list of top patient safety experts each time since 2015.

Carayon co-chaired a National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine committee that released a report on clinician burnout and well-being in 2019. The National Academies named her a National Associate in February 2020.

Carayon is also the Smart and Connected Healthcare Lead in the Grainger Institute for Engineering at UW-Madison.
