Juliana Pacheco Duarte and Steffi Diem, Assistant Professors in the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics, have been selected by the National Academy of Sciences to be 2025 Kavli Fellows, young scientists recognized for their exceptional research contributions.

They participated in the 2025 U.S. Kavli Frontiers of Science Symposium held last week at the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center of the National Academies of Sciences and Engineering in Irvine, California. The symposium is designed to bring together emerging leaders to share ideas across disciplines.

Both of the newly-selected Kavli Fellows presented a poster and 60-second “flash talk” at the symposium. Duarte’s talk highlighted current safety challenges in fission and fusion energy research, while Diem discussed innovations that will bring us closer to a fusion energy future.
