Whitney Loo, the Conway Assistant Professor in chemical and biological engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is the recipient of a Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Award from the nonprofit group Oak Ridge Associated Universities.

These competitive research awards provide seed money for junior faculty members within two years of their tenure track appointment. They are intended to enrich the research skills and professional development of young faculty members. Each recipient receives $5,000 from ORAU which is matched by their home institution.

Loo designs polymers for a more sustainable future. Her projects include the synthesis and characterization of sustainable polymers as well as the development of sustainable polymer-based devices such as battery electrolytes and fuel cell membranes.

This year, ORAU awarded $175,000 in grants to 35 different researchers.
