March 23, 2023 Radu Serban Recognized as Distinguished Scientist Written By: Caitlin Scott Departments: Mechanical Engineering Categories: Awards|Research Congratulations to Dr. Radu Serban on his recognition as a Distinguished Scientist in the Department of Mechanical Engineering! Serban is an international expert in the field of computational dynamics and an outstanding researcher, mentor, and colleague with a balanced portfolio of research, education/mentoring, and outreach accomplishments. He is a technical lead in the Simulation Based Engineering Lab (SBEL) along with Professor Dan Negrut. Since joining University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2013, Serban has been PI or co-PI on projects totaling over $5 million. Serban has recently led or co-led projects for NSF, US Army, and Department of Defense. He works at the intersection of Mechanical Engineering, Applied Math, and Computer Science, and can undertake challenging research and software development projects that very few other individuals are equipped to pursue. Prof. Dan Negrut Negrut shares, “Dr. Serban has the rare ability to combine research with software development – in other words, take an idea, do research, produce an algorithm or modeling technique, and then implement it in software that is subsequently used by tens of thousands of individuals and organizations. In fact, he was recognized last month with the 2023 SIAM/ACM Prize in Computational Science and Engineering. This prize has been awarded only 10 times in the past, and almost without exception, the awardees were members of the National Academy of Science or American Academy of Arts & Sciences. Dr. Serban’s work is of that caliber.” Read more about Serban’s recent work: Serban team awarded SIAM ACM prize NSF grant supports robotics and computer simulation with rural Wisconsin high school students
