This past year, the Matter journal recognized Rose K. Cersonsky as one of 35 (plus one extra) global researches approximately under the age of 35. This “35 under 35” list dives into the challenges the younger generation of researchers are facing in the materials science industry.

By leveraging Machine Learning (ML) and data science to look at how the behavior of chemical systems, Cersonsky and her team aim to design and understand new multi-scale materials. Their approach combines mathematics, physics, and scientific programming to open up the black boxes underlying machine learning to lead to new fundamental scientific knowledge. This can advance industries and areas such as, semi-flexible polymers, pharmaceutical drugs, and glass systems.

The editorial team at Matter used a unique invitation system to select the individuals for the final collection. After sending three initial invitations to three global regions in three distinct fields, those invitees then recommended the next researcher. And so on and so forth. Their aim with this technique was to avoid selection bias and avoid covering a small select group of researches based on a previous list of accomplishments and recognition by the “older” generation. And who better to endorse young emerging researchers than their peers.
