The College of Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has named Grainger Institute for Engineering Professor Xudong Wang the Thomas and Suzanne Werner Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.

Wang’s research focuses on the growth and development of novel nanomaterials and nanodevices for energy harvesting and biotechnology applications. That includes developing nanogenerators, piezoelectric materials and ultrathin oxide nanomaterials.

Wang’s technical advances have earned him many honors including a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers and election as an AAAS Fellow. But the applications of his research often capture the public imagination and include self-powered implantable devices that help mend bone; bandages that use nanogenerators to heal wounds; a membrane that prevents dendrite formation in batteries, increasing their lifespan; a film that dramatically improves the life of hydrogen-producing electrodes; as well as a hat that stimulates hair growth, and flooring that produces electricity among other novel projects.

Wang’s new professorship is endowed by Thomas Werner (BSIE ’82), a college of engineering alumnus, and his wife Suzanne. Werner is the former CEO and chairman of SunPower, a residential solar power firm, and is currently a technology investor, advisor and board member of various technology companies. He also serves on the COE Industrial Advisory board. Over the years, the Werners have generously contributed to the college of engineering, supporting its continuing research endeavor.
