Filiz Yesilkoy, an assistant professor of biomedical engineering, is among the recipients of a Vilas Faculty Early Career Investigator Award, one of the Vilas honors available to University of Wisconsin-Madison faculty and staff.

Yesilkoy, who arrived at UW-Madison in 2020, earned a prestigious Trailblazer R21 Award from the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering in 2023. She combines research in photonics and nanotechnology to develop biomedical sensors that could be useful for research and public health efforts.

The early career awards, which recognize research and teaching excellence, provide flexible research funding for three years. Vilas awards are supported by the estate of professor, U.S. Senator and UW Regent William F. Vilas.
