Nuclear innovation policy guide named one of top 50 policy reports

Written By: Adam Malecek

The University of Pennsylvania Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program (TTCSP) has selected a report co-authored by nuclear engineering and engineering physics Professor Todd Allen as one of the top 50 worldwide policy study-reports produced by a think tank in 2016.

The Third Way think tank produced the report, “A step-by-step guide to nuclear innovation policy.” In the report, Allen and co-author Erin Burns, policy advisor for Third Way’s clean energy program, describe the path of a hypothetical nuclear engineering graduate student named Carla who has an innovative idea. The report follows along step-by-step as Carla secures investments, tests her ideas and finally builds a demonstration reactor. The report identifies challenges Carla faces along the way and outlines specific policies that can help her overcome each obstacle.

Allen, who leads the energy and sustainability research thrust in the Grainger Institute for Engineering at the UW-Madison College of Engineering, was previously a senior visiting fellow at Third Way.

The 2016 Global Go To Think Tank Index marked the 10th year of continued efforts by the TTCSP to acknowledge the important contributions and emerging global trends of think tanks worldwide.
