The University of Wisconsin-Madison College of Engineering will be well represented at the National Academy of Engineering’s 2021 US Frontiers of Engineering Symposium.

Melissa Skala, an associate professor of biomedical engineering, is a committee member for the event and will co-chair a session on engineering innovation in women’s health. Mikhail Kats, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering and Dugald C. Jackson Faculty Scholar, has also been invited to participate as one of 85 early career engineers from across industry, academia and the public sector.

The symposium will take place Feb. 25-27, 2021, in Irvine, California. The purpose of the annual gathering is to bring together younger engineers performing exceptional research in different technical areas in the hopes that their interactions will spark innovation and facilitate long-term collaborations.

Next year’s symposium will focus on four wide-ranging topics: the future of agriculture, integrating next-generation energy systems, engineering innovation in women’s health, and tackling pollution problems associated with plastic.

Skala, who’s also an investigator at the Morgridge Institute for Research on the UW-Madison campus, applies optical imaging technologies to develop personalized cancer treatments.

Kats specializes in experimental and theoretical research across a broad range of topics, including optics and photonics, devise physics and nanoscale science.
