Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering Melissa Skala and members of her lab have published a review paper examining fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) in the Journal of Biomedical Optics.
FLIM is an imaging technique for detecting changes at the molecular scale. It’s been used to study the progression of skin diseases in humans, as well as cancer development in animal models and organoids.
Skala was last author on the paper, with biomedical engineering graduate students Tiffany Heaster and Amani Gillette contributing, along with first author Rupsa Datta, an assistant scientist with Skala’s lab in the Morgridge Institute for Research on the UW-Madison campus, and lab alumnus Joe Sharick.
Skala is an expert in applying optical imaging to cancer research, with an end goal of helping inform personalized treatments for patients.
