Wisconsin Racing is ready to return to the track.
The University of Wisconsin-Madison engineering student organization, officially the UW-Madison Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Formula Team, will unveil its 2018 cars at a public event on April 28, 2018, at 7:30 p.m. in the Discovery Building on the UW-Madison campus.
Wisconsin Racing will also livestream the event on its Facebook page.
The team will show off two race cars: one powered by an internal combustion engine and the other using electric motors. They’re the products of two semesters of work, beginning each fall and culminating with competition in the spring.
First up is the combustion competition, Formula SAE Michigan, May 9-12, 2018, in Brooklyn, Michigan. Wisconsin Racing, which placed 10th in 2017, will compete against nearly 120 teams from around the world. The combustion car, called WR-218, features a student-designed-and-manufactured powertrain package, carbon fiber monocoque chassis and custom electronics.
Then the electric car will get its shot at Formula SAE Electric June 20-23, 2018, in Lincoln, Nebraska, where it will compete against 29 other teams. Wisconsin Racing placed eighth in the electric competition in 2017, its first foray into the event. This year’s electric vehicle, WR-218e, includes four electric hub motors, a custom quad core inverter and student-generated torque vector controls.
