Written By: Tom Ziemer

The University of Wisconsin-Madison steel bridge team, made up of students from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, finished 14th at the 2019 Student Steel Bridge Competition National Finals.

The competition, sponsored by the American Institute of Steel Construction, took place May 31-June 1, 2019, in Carbondale, Illinois. Lafayette College won its second consecutive national title.

The UW-Madison students also made a strong impression on one of the event’s judges and a local resident after the competition had wrapped up.

On its way home from the national finals, the UW-Madison steel bridge team stopped to assist an elderly woman in getting back to her assisted living facility

“Through this competition, we’ve learned many things that aren’t necessarily taught in a class, including leading a team, project management skills, the ability to deal with multiple challenges at once, and how to balance work and school,” says Marc Kluge, one of the co-chairs for the 2018-19 team, which won its regional to qualify for the national event.
