News blocks are used for showing the news content types. There are 2 ways to showcase news, Slider and Featured, and one way to allow users to filter and search news themselves.
News – Card Slider
This block has three sections. Introduction, Add/Edit Cards, and Configuration.
For the WP Block setting the size should be set to fullwidth.

Add/Edit Cards

notes: Tag and Focus Area currently do not have proper tagging to be used.

used to show the featured image from the news article. It’s encouraged to keep this checked.
- Display Excerpt

- Display Dept
Shows all of the departments associated with this news. this may be on for pages that have news for multiple departments, however be warned it will get long if a news article is tagged for many departments.
- Background
by default this has a white background. However there are instances on pages where this may be in the middle of the page and it’s helpful to separate it from the item above or below it. in those cases we have 5 background options that are all light grey in tone. (Diagonal line, dot, grid, plus, solid grey)
- Block Wrapper
used by marketing to apply custom CSS styles if needed. Used sparingly.
- Anchor ID
You may assign this block a name, it will allow you to link to this block on the page with an anchor tag. (engineering.wisc.edu/pagename#AnchorID) If you use this please use a name that will be unique like cbe-news, also it is case sensitive and should not use spaces.
Introduction: Section Title here
Introduction: Section Subtitle
This paragraph is part of the introduction section it will show up on the top right side of the block. You’ll also notice in the configuration section if introduction the Title Heading alignment, that setting determines how the title and subtitle are going align up to this text. (Start | Center | End). I could say that’s left, center or right. In many cases this text isn’t going to be long enough for you to notice much of a difference. This currently is set to end/right. You also may add link below this paragraph of copy.

News – Listing with Facets
These blocks are used to show large numbers of news items on a page. There are two main ways to show them, as a grid these are a more visual card approach and the other is list where there is an image to the right and text about the news item on the left.
Introduction
The standard intro section with Title, subtitle, content and alignment for the titles. These are optional.
Configuration
- Layout
Choose between a list view, and a grid view. List is most often used.
- Filter by Category, Tag, Dept, focus area
Pre-filters select which news articles will be available by this block.
- Posts per page
Chooses the number of posts loaded at the start. When showing a list view we use 10. It’s not recommended to use -1 which will show all items, there will be too many news items for the page and it will load slowly.
- Enable Paging
Allows the user to click a button to see more of the results, when not checked they are limited to the number of posts when loaded.
- Enable Filtering
Adds boxes to the left of the results and allowing people filter by the options you select. (Category, Dept, Focus Area)
- Display image
Shows the featured image from the news article. It’s encouraged to keep this checked.
- Display Excerpt
Shows the teaser text for the article.
- Display Dept
Shows the departments associated with this news. Be warned it will get long if a news article is tagged for many departments.
