Bier lands NSF grant to study human, machine learning

Written By:

Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering Vicki Bier has received a $200,000 exploratory grant from the National Science Foundation to support her research exploring the gaps between human and machine learning.

Bier, an expert in risk and decision analysis, is collaborating with Gary Lupyan, an associate professor of psychology, and Xiaojin Zhu, a professor of computer sciences, on the project, which also received support through the UW2020: WARF Discovery Initiative.

By probing the differences in human and machine intelligence, Bier and her collaborators hope to address limitations in machine learning and inform the construction of systems that harness the strengths of humans and machines in partnership.
