Maribel Torres-Velazquez, a PhD student in biomedical engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has been honored as one of the 2021 Massachusetts Institute of Technology Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Rising Stars.

The Rising Stars workshop highlights graduate students and postdoctoral researchers from historically underrepresented and marginalized backgrounds who are pursuing academic careers in electrical engineering and computer science.

During the virtual workshop, which took place Oct. 14-15, 2021, Torres-Velazquez presented her work using deep learning techniques to better inform epilepsy treatment. In her research, she applies computational techniques to study neurological diseases.

Torres-Velazquez is a member of the lab of Alan McMillan, an associate professor in the Departments of Radiology and Medical Physics in the School of Medicine and Public Health and a three-time UW-Madison graduate in biomedical engineering.
