During the fall semester of 2021, several UW-Madison Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering students received notable awards from various professional societies.

Graduate student Audrey Evans, who works in the lab of Philip Dunham Reed Professor Susan Hagness, was selected to receive an IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society doctoral research grant. The $2,500 grants are given to up to ten PhD students each year and are intended to encourage students to pursue a career in the area of electromagnetics.

Rafael Castillo Sierra, a PhD student working with the WEMPEC Research Group, is the winner of the 2021 EMTP Research Contribution Prize Program in the model category. The $1,000 prize recognizes Sierra’s model which uses a new type of frequency converter to enable low-frequency AC transmission over longer distances. EMTP, the prize sponsor, is a sophisticated computer program used to simulate electromagnetic, electromechanical and control system transients in multiphase electric power systems.

Undergraduate Thomas Nguyen is the recipient of a 2021-2022 IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) scholarship. IEEE PES started its scholarship program to help attract more undergraduates into the power and energy engineering career pathway. Scholarship recipients must be full-time students working on an electrical engineering degree and taking at least 9 credits of power engineering courses. Recipients must also maintain a high GPA. This is the third year in a row that Nguyen has received the scholarship.
