MS&E student wins award for molten salt research

Written By: Sam Million-Weaver

William Doniger, a materials science and engineering PhD student, received second place for his poster presentation on molten salt corrosion and electrochemistry at a major international meeting in the Netherlands, July 4-5, 2019. The conference was the final gathering of a multi-year, multi-institution initiative called Safety Assessment of the Molten Salt Fast Reactor (SAMOFAR), which is working to find alternative coolants to water for nuclear power plants, in hopes of reducing the risk of catastrophic accidents. Doniger, whose advisor is nuclear engineering and engineering physics and Materials Science and Engineering Distinguished Research Professor Kumar Sridharan, traveled to the Netherlands under the auspices of an initiative called NuSTEM, which stands for Nuclear Science, Technology, and Education for Molten Salt Reactors and is a joint collaboration between UW-Madison, Texas A&M, and the University of California, Berkeley.
