Kalin Kiesling and Katie Mummah, both PhD students in nuclear engineering and engineering physics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, have been awarded graduate scholarships from the American Nuclear Society for the 2020–2021 academic year.

Kiesling received the Everitt P. Blizard Graduate Scholarship. In her research, she develops computational methods and software to simulate radiation transport through matter. This research is useful for applications such as simulating the radiation shielding around a nuclear reactor or fusion device.

“It is important that we develop accurate methods for simulating the radiation before we embark on building devices like these to ensure we have a good design,” Kiesling says. “The computational methods I develop are specifically aimed at increasing the fidelity of our simulations by reducing the error in the simulation results and increasing computational efficiency so that we can run larger and more complex problems.”

Mummah received the Michael J. Lineberry Graduate Scholarship. Her research focuses on modeling the nuclear fuel cycle for nuclear nonproliferation.

Kiesling and Mummah are members of Grainger Professor of Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics Department Chair Paul Wilson‘s Computational Nuclear Engineering Research Group (CNERG).
