Nicole Werner, an assistant professor of industrial and systems engineering, recently published a study with colleagues at the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing and the University of Michigan. The paper, lead-authored by Werner, appeared in the February 2017 issue of Applied Clinical Informatics, a highly-ranked journal in health informatics. The study used focus groups to better understand the types of barriers faced by an estimated 15 million family caregivers of more than 5 million patients with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias in the United States. The results will inform the design of a web-based platform Werner’s colleagues are developing to assist caregivers with the challenging management of common dementia-related behaviors, such as aggression, agitation and depression.
