Each semester, undergraduate students in the Department of Biomedical Engineering’s design program take on projects from clients that include community members, companies and UW-Madison researchers.

Clinicians and faculty members in the Department of Radiology are among some of those repeat clients, and Radiology Professor Kenneth Lee, Associate Professor Andrew Ross and Assistant Professor Matthew Smith all worked with BME student teams during the spring 2025 semester.

“It’s really fun and rewarding to work with motivated undergraduate students who want to help solve a clinical problem,” says Lee, who worked with teams that developed a ‘Cyst Blaster’ to remove Baker cysts behind the knee and a wearable device to measure muscle mass. “The interdisciplinary collaboration leads to solutions you may not have considered, and the time commitment is only about an hour a week for the semester. So, it’s incredibly worthwhile to participate.”
