March 25, 2019 Twice as nice: Skala earns pair of fellow honors Written By: Tom Ziemer Departments: Biomedical Engineering Categories: Awards Melissa Skala, an associate professor of biomedical engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a principal investigator at the Morgridge Institute for Research, has earned recognition in 2019 as a fellow of both the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) and SPIE, an international society for optics and photonics. AIMBE inducted Skala as part of its 2019 College of Fellows class on March 25, 2019, in a ceremony in Washington, D.C. AIMBE touts its fellows as representing the top two percent of medical and biological engineers. Skala earned selection for her work applying optical imaging to tumor metabolism and personalized cancer drug screenings. SPIE, meanwhile, inducted Skala in January 2019 as part of a class that also included the three 2018 Nobel Laureates in physics, Arthur Ashkin, Gerard Mourou and Donna Strickland. SPIE fellows are standouts in the fields of optics, photonics and imaging.
