The International Brain Barriers Society selected chemical and biological engineering graduate student Benjamin Gastfriend to receive a 2018 poster award at the Barriers of the Central Nervous System Gordon Research Conference, held June 17-22, 2018, in New London, New Hampshire. Gastfriend, who is coadvised by Milton J. and A. Maude Shoemaker Professor Sean Palaceck and Howard Curler Distinguished Professor Eric Shusta, presented the poster, “Human stem-cell based models of the neurovascular unit,” describing his research growing artificial brain blood vessels inside laboratory dishes. Such efforts could aid in drug-development—a great area of need because delivering pharmaceuticals from the blood to the brain is a major challenge.
